Big Kahuna Ironman – 1 Week

It took me a while to get this post up, but you have to forgive me as it was a holiday weekend. Race week is here! The Big Kahuna Half Ironman Race is about to start. This week couldn’t get here sooner. This previous week of training felt like a lot of empty miles. My body was just not into it. My legs felt like rubber most of the time and it all just started to really feel old hat. the fatigue makes sense though. Last October, I tried to achieve 500km (310 miles) in training and burned out just as badly, if not worse. I was able to exceed mileage this year and in addition to two other 300+ mile months right before this one. So, I guess I have the right to be a bit exhausted. The timing isn’t all that bad, as I needed to taper and rest up before the big race on Sunday regardless.

In a way, I am glad I waited to post this update until today because I can throw a shout out to Diana Nyad for completing a 35-year-old dream. For those who don’t know, Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage or swim fins, swimming from Havana to Key West over the holiday weekend. It was her 5th attempt at the record for longest swim without the aid of a shark cage and she finally completed it at the age of 64. She embodies everything that is great about perseverance, endurance sports, and dreaming big. Her accomplishment makes my little 1.2 mile swim start to the Big Kahuna seem insignificant in comparison. Though the swim will still be hard work for me, I feel extra motivated after Nyad’s world record-breaking performance. Anyway, I am looking forward to writing my post race report next Monday, so until then, wish Angela and I luck.
