Big Kahuna Ironman – 9 Weeks

There aren’t many words to describe the feeling of being out in the ocean with some baby seals, battling through giant kelt, watching out for sting rays and leopard sharks, and battling 3-5 foot waves. Awesome, just about sums it up all up. I only wish I had a camera to catch what I saw and experienced. I think I will invest in a GoPro Camera for the next ocean swim. It’s just insane to look down at water a 100 plus feet below you and see the amount of sea life below you, roll over to blue skies, gaze over to the cliffs at the sea lions and be pushing yourself to keep going when the land doesn’t seem to be getting any closer. Other than finishing my first marathon, this may have been the greatest moment in my athletic life ever.

Big Kahuna Ironman – 10 Weeks

I really have to credit my increased discipline and smarter recovery techniques with being able to take my training up a notch. I was able to cycle 64 miles on the last day of June and bounce right back and keep training the next couple of days. My current recovery concoction is a combination drink that helps speed up muscle repair. I take a 500 ml bottle of water and add to it a scoop of Amazing Grass Trio, two table spoons of L-Glutamine, and one FRS Energy Shot. Shake and serve cold; voila, instant magic in a bottle.

Big Kahuna Ironman – 11 Weeks

So, we are now at 11 weeks until the Big Kahuna Triathlon. We completed one week of baseline training which included an open water swim test on Sunday. That swim test was the high and low of the week for me… Rather than talk about my training the first week as I am now quite used to it, I wanted to include a couple of mini interviews in this week’s post. I have a few questions and responses below from Angela Huynh, who will give her feedback on the first week of training for the Big Kahuna and also some discussion with Tyler Lu who just completed his first marathon at 17 at the WIPRO San Francisco Marathon.

Wahoo Fitness App and HR Monitor Review

Wahoo Fitness App and HR Monitor Review

In the past I’ve written a lot here about tracking my workouts here but I haven’t always had all of the data that I would like to have around my workouts. Recently Angela and I put money into purchasing heart rate monitors to enhance the detail around our workouts. We tried a couple of different heart rate monitors including the Polar H7 and the Wahoo Blue HR monitor. Both of which utilize Bluetooth Smart technology to connect and stream heart rate data to your Bluetooth Smart enabled phone. Each monitor rests in a strap that you wear around chest. After trying out the Polar it to be inconsistent in its compatibility and performance with many of the apps that we like to use. We switched to the Wahoo because it came highly recommended from a number of sites and is RunKeeper endorsed.

500 KM Challenge – Second Update

500 KM Challenge – Second Update

Well, I’ll start by getting straight into it. I didn’t hit my 500 km goal for September. I did a total of 230 miles last month, about 70 miles or 23% short of the 310 miles I needed. I was unfortunately derailed by a chest infection during the latter part of the month that kept me sidelined. I tried a workout now and then but they were wasted efforts where I found it hard to breath most of the time. Disappointing I know, but I am not Superman and shouldn’t expect Herculean efforts to just come to me.

The Mile Breakdown Track Workout

The Mile Breakdown Track Workout

This post is a more of a training guide/tip for those looking to maintain their short distances speeds while training for a half marathon or greater. I recently noticed my pace slowing down over the course of training for the 500K challenge. Running endurance races is great, but keeping up your weight and speed are hard to do when you want to be at the front of the pack. I found a workout that can help with distance speeds and it’s called the Mile Breakdown and I borrowed it from Mark Remy at Runner’s World.
